Rojéke means ’One day’ and is AySay’s second single from the upcoming EP ’Kervane’.

A tribute song written to honor the memory of the traveler. An interpretation of the history of the Kurdish people, and a tale of a persecuted people who manages to trust in their own steps, led by the full moon to new mountain peaks.

Despite her Kurdish roots, AySay’s frontwoman, Luna Ersahin, has never learned Kurdish. However, she is used to singing it, and has listened with great love to Kurdish idols such as Aynur Dogan throughout her upbringing. Writing Rojéke has been as much a process for Luna herself as it has been a task lifted collectively by AySay’s network.

Starting with a Turkish text written by Luna, the trio reached out via their Instagram profile and received more than 50 helpful offers of translation. The trio has gained newfound support from an international Kurdish community thanks to a video recorded interpretation of the traditional Kurdish song ”Ez kevok im”, which Luna sang in Chile and that has since gone viral on social media. The process is a testament to the multi cultural community and border crossing human presence that is at the core of AySay’s inspiration and vision.

Rojekê takes great inspiration in the Turkish pysch folk sound which originated with 70’s legends like Selda Bagcan and Baris Manco, and that bands such as Dutch Altin Gün is currently touring the world with today. Baglama master Orhan Özgür Turan (Hudna, Ipek Yolu, Özgür) guests the single with mesmerizing riffs, thus assisting AySay in their effort to create the first ever Anatolian psychedelic folk in Kurdish.

However much an homage, Rojéke is also a protest song. A colorful and uplilfting, but also sharp and insistent message reminding us that culture runs in our blood, and that music is a weapon in the fight against oppression and discrimination. Affiliation, ownership and identity are choices we make. AySay proposes a hope for a future where the right to exist is taken back to never again be dictated by where you were born.
